Founded in 2016 by journeyman potter Brad Lail and myself, Lail Design merged craft with considered design to create a distinctive ceramics brand. Drawing from heritage English potters like Bernard Leach and contemporary makers like Jono Pandolfi, the work settled into pared-back forms with a quiet Scandinavian sensibility. Over time I drove the brand's evolution from its original neutral palette toward something more vibrant introducing seasonal color shifts, and a livelier design language rooted in my background in color and pattern.

Working from our home in Woodstock, I developed a visual language drawing inspiration from the Hudson Valley landscape. Brand illustrations feature pottery forms nestled within undulating mountain and river lines, while glaze names honor the surrounding environment, inspired by local flora and fauna. A simple, geometric logo offered deliberate contrast to the organic imperfections celebrated in the pottery itself.

Seasonal color releases became the most anticipated moment in our calendar, with many customers collecting new pieces every season. Each palette was carefully designed to flow from the last, ensuring the full collection remained cohesive and complementary across every release.

Fall 2019

The brand became known for its seasonal glaze palettes and consistent wheel-thrown forms. Lail Design pieces found their way into local Hudson Valley and NYC boutiques and cafes, building a loyal following. I developed the brand's signature flatlay photography for use in digital and social, and the seasonal storytelling campaigns became a love letter to both the art of pottery and the Hudson Valley landscape.
